Starting and finishing at The Moss Trooper in Timperley, this walk combines an easy urban section with a lovely stretch along the Bridgewater Canal, finishing with a halfway coffee stop at Kickback Coffee before retracing the route back.
The first part of the walk follows the roads through Timperley before dropping down onto the canal towpath. Once you’re beside the water, the surroundings quickly change and you’re treated to a peaceful, mostly flat canalside walk towards Altrincham.
There’s plenty for little ones to look out for along the canal, from ducks and passing boats to dogs enjoying their walks. At the halfway point you’ll find Kickback Coffee tucked underneath the railway arches – the perfect place to refuel before heading back.
The majority of the route is very manageable with a pram, although the access between Frieston Road and the canal is awkward and requires extra care when getting a pushchair up and down.

“I really enjoy the Moss Trooper walk because you get two completely different parts to it. Although you start off walking along the roads through Timperley, once you reach the canal it becomes such a lovely, peaceful walk. There’s always something for little ones to look at too, whether it’s ducks on the canal, boats going past or all the dogs being walked along the towpath.I also love having Kickback Coffee as our halfway stop. It’s the perfect excuse to grab a coffee, have a quick catch-up and refuel before walking back! The canal itself is relatively flat and easy to walk, so once you’ve tackled the slightly awkward pram access, it’s a really enjoyable route“

Timperley, Altrincham.
The walk starts and finishes at The Moss Trooper, Moss Lane, Timperley, WA15 6JU.
Parking
Parking is available at The Moss Trooper.
Please check any current parking arrangements when you arrive and park considerately, particularly when attending as part of a larger Walking Mums group.
Toilets
Toilets are available at The Moss Trooper for customers.
Facilities are also available around the Altrincham end of the route, but we’d recommend using the toilets before setting off.
Café Nearby
This walk has the best of both worlds!
At the halfway point, we stop at Kickback Coffee at The Arches, right beside the Bridgewater Canal. It’s a brilliant place to grab a coffee and refuel before walking back.

There’s indoor and outdoor seating, highchairs and a large, secure walled garden where little ones can enjoy some extra space.
Pram Friendliness

The majority of this route is very pram friendly. Once you’re on the Bridgewater Canal, the route is predominantly flat and straightforward.
The main difficulty is the canal access at the end of Frieston Road. Getting a pram down to and back up from the towpath can be awkward, so please take your time and ask someone for help if needed.
Accessibility
Although the canal itself is relatively flat, this particular Walking Mums route isn’t fully accessible because of the difficult access between Frieston Road and the canal towpath.
The road and canal sections themselves are generally straightforward, but the access point should be considered.
Scenery
A lovely mix of Timperley and peaceful Bridgewater Canal scenery.
Once you’re on the canal, there are boats, ducks, greenery and plenty of dogs and other walkers to spot along the way.
Play Area
There isn’t a dedicated play area along this particular route.
Picnic Spot
There are places to stop alongside the canal, although the halfway stop at Kickback Coffee makes this more of a walk-and-coffee route than a picnic walk.
Distance
Approximately 3 miles in total.
Allow around 1–1½ hours of walking time at Walking Mums’ relaxed social pace, plus time for your coffee stop at Kickback.
Terrain
A mixture of pavements and predominantly flat canal towpath.
Best Age Group
Great for newborns and babies in prams, as well as toddlers who are happy to spend some of the route in their pushchair.
Because of the road sections and proximity to open water, younger children walking independently will need close supervision.
Route Description
Start at The Moss Trooper on Moss Lane.
Walk along Moss Lane towards Park Road.
Turn left onto Park Road.
Continue along Park Road, passing Timperley Metrolink station.
Just after the Spar and crossroads, turn right onto Frieston Road.
Continue straight along Frieston Road all the way to the end.
At the end of Frieston Road, take the access down to the Bridgewater Canal.
Pram note: This is the awkward part of the route and the access isn’t particularly pram friendly. Take your time when getting a pushchair down and ask another walker for help if needed.
Once you reach the canal towpath, turn right.
Follow the Bridgewater Canal towards Altrincham, staying on the towpath alongside the water.
Continue past the canal boats and greenery and head towards the railway arches.
When you reach the brick railway arches, you’ll find Kickback Coffee at Arch 4.
Stop for a well-earned coffee before turning around at Kickback.
Retrace your steps along the same canal towpath towards Timperley.
Continue until you reach the Frieston Road canal access.
Carefully take your pram back up from the towpath onto Frieston Road.
Walk straight along Frieston Road until you reach Park Road.
Turn left onto Park Road.
Continue along Park Road, passing Timperley Metrolink station again.
Continue until you reach Moss Lane.
Turn right onto Moss Lane.
Follow Moss Lane back to The Moss Trooper, where the walk finishes.
Potential Risks
- Awkward pram access: The access between Frieston Road and the Bridgewater Canal isn’t particularly pram friendly. Take extra care when lowering or lifting a pushchair and ask for assistance where necessary.
- Open water: A large section of the route follows the Bridgewater Canal. The canal edge may be unfenced, so children should be supervised closely at all times.
- Road walking: The beginning and end of the route involve walking alongside roads through Timperley. Keep younger children close and remain aware of passing traffic.
- Busy road crossing: There is a busier road to cross along the route. Please use the pedestrian crossing provided and wait for the whole group where necessary.
- Cyclists: The canal towpath is shared with cyclists. Keep to one side where possible and be aware of cyclists approaching from behind.
- Narrow sections: Parts of the towpath may be narrower, particularly when passing other walkers, pushchairs, dogs or cyclists.
- Dogs: The canal is popular with dog walkers. Children should be supervised around unfamiliar dogs.
- Towpaths may become wet, muddy or slippery following poor weather.
- Ducks, geese and other wildlife may be close to the path. Please enjoy them from a safe distance and supervise children.
- Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for the conditions.
