Knutsford and Tatton Park Walk

Walk CategoriesWalk Regions

Knutsford and Tatton Park is one of Walking Mums’ most loved walks, and it’s easy to see why. Starting from the Knutsford entrance, this beautiful route takes you through stunning tree lined paths, around the picturesque Tatton Mere and into the heart of Tatton Park, where you’re likely to spot deer and an abundance of wildlife along the way.

The walk follows mostly flat, well maintained paths, making it ideal for a relaxed social stroll while enjoying some of Cheshire’s most beautiful scenery. Whether you’re joining us with a newborn, a toddler or older children, there’s always plenty to see to keep everyone entertained.

Many of our members say this is more than just a walk – it’s a day out. After the walk, adults are spoiled for choice with some of Cheshire’s best independent coffee shops nearby, including Tatton Perk, April’s Kitchen and Detaljer, you can then browse the independent shops around Knutsford or spend more time exploring the park with family and friends. It’s the perfect destination for a weekend outing and one you’ll want to return to again and again.

Why We Love This Walk

“I love the Knutsford walk because its a longer length with different terrain and views, plus its nice to make a full day of it in Knutsford visiting the local walking mum perks. The park at the end is a nice spot for older ones and babies

“My favourite is Knutsford, the stunning tree lined paths, the mere and deer is just incredible. The Brilliant playground at the end gives you something to coax children along. You can make a real day of it as there are so many independent shops to wander. Perfect day with partner, family and friends

Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire. We begin our walks from the Knutsford entrance to Tatton Park before enjoying a scenic walk around Tatton Mere and through The Moor.

Parking

Free on-street parking is available around Mereheath Lane (WA16 6AN), or you can use the nearby pay-and-display Tatton Street and King Street Car Parks. Please check local parking restrictions before leaving your vehicle.

Toilets

Public toilets and baby changing facilities are available at the Knutsford entrance to Tatton Park before the walk begins.

Café Nearby

After the walk, many of our mums stop at Tatton Perk for a well-earned coffee and cake. If you’re making a day of it, Tatton Perk, April’s Kitchen and Detaljer are also fantastic independent cafés within walking distance.

Pram Friendliness

⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Suitable for most pushchairs. The majority of the route follows wide gravel and park paths, although some sections can be bumpy, so an all-terrain pram or one with larger wheels is recommended.

Accessibility

The route is mostly accessible with wide paths throughout. There are no significant hills, although some gravel sections and uneven surfaces may make it more challenging for lightweight pushchairs. There is also a section towards the end as you leave Dog Wood which is challenging on your own (we would not advise a double pram alone).

Scenery

One of the most picturesque walks in the Walking Mums calendar. Enjoy beautiful views across Tatton Mere, mature woodland, open parkland and the chance to spot deer, herons, ducks and a variety of wildlife.

Play Area

The walk finishes at The Moor, where there is a fantastic playground that’s perfect for toddlers and older children to enjoy after the walk.

Picnic Spot

There are plenty of grassy areas, benches and scenic spots around Tatton Mere, making this a lovely location for a picnic during the warmer months plus Moor Park has picnic benches to sit at.

Distance

Approximately 3 miles, taking around 1½ hours at Walking Mums’ relaxed social pace.

Terrain

A mixture of compact gravel paths, woodland tracks and paved sections. Mostly flat throughout, although some surfaces are uneven or loose underfoot.

Best Age Group

Suitable for all ages, from newborns in prams to toddlers and preschoolers. It’s also an excellent choice for families with older siblings thanks to the playground, cafés and independent shops nearby.

Route Description

Walk up Knutsford Drive into the park.

Head north along the path beside Tatton Mere for approx 1 mile.

Cross the cattle grid and take the path over the top of the mere before walking back south alongside the water through the Dog Wood.

Turn left onto Mallard Close.

Turn right onto Teal Avenue, then right onto Mobberley Drive.
